Sonkran or water festival, is a very big time of the Thai year,
I have seen only 2, this year was my second, they are a really
good fun time, but not liked by everyone.

I think it has started a long time ago in Thailand and basically
the Thai people wish good luck upon one another by pouring
bits of water over one another, which is very nice, in
pattaya however, things changed when tourists, same as me
appeared on the scene and that bit of pouring water on one
another has turned into a water fight.

It is held in April of every year and different areas have different days and dates etc, but in pattaya it goes on for approx 7 days, some streets start a day or 2 before the rest but it very quickly becomes very hard to keep out of the way, if thats what you
want!

It is virtually impossible to travel around pattaya on this occasion without getting soaked wet, some older people don't go out for a week, but best thing to do is get in the swing of it.
Just wear shorts and a t shirt, keep mobile phones wallets etc back at hotel or if ya need them put in a plastic bag and seal with a rubber band, then just walk around while everyone throws water at everyone else.

on an evening about 6pm people stop and pack away for the nightlife but you do get some keeping it going all night, now thats because its a holiday resort and many people drink too much and don't want the party too stop!

The police this year confiscated water pistols at about 7 pm to help with the people who was here on holiday and wanted a quite night without a bucket of water thrown on them after they'd spent an hour getting ready to go to a restaurant!

This is my view of the sonkran period and my not be 100% correct but it gives a rough idea!
